The dataset contains 53 variables, including business name, 8-digit SIC (Standard Industrial Classification Code), NAICS Code, employee counts, parent company name, sales volume at physical location and parent company, ownership type. Business records in the data set are compiled from business directories, internet, telephone listings, government data sources, business magazines, newsletters and newspapers. The file is updated quarterly.

The Canada Business Summary database provides the aggregate counts of over 1.1 million businesses in Canada, for each level of Canadian geography CAN, PR, CMA, CD, CSD, CT, FSA​. Each table represents counts of businesses in Canada by 2-digit (US) SIC code for all levels of geography. All data are based on the Canadian Business Points database which contains the unit record level information on businesses in Canada.
Business records in the dataset are summarized from the Canada Business Points dataset, which is compiled from more than 300 sources including business directories, internet, telephone listings, government data sources, business magazines, newsletters and newspapers.
Use the Canada Business Summary file to understand the number and type of businesses within a geographic area or to facilitate mapping and studies of consumers, site location models, target areas or revealing competitive saturation, assigning territories, build sales, marketing strategies and insurance risk assessments.

The Financial Institutions file contains the branches of all major deposit-taking financial institutions (banks, trust companies, credit unions, and caisse populaires) in Canada. Major institution locations include Royal Bank, TD Canada Trust, Bank of Nova Scotia, CIBC, Bank of Montreal, National Bank, Laurentian Bank, Alberta Treasury Branch and HSBC Bank Canada. The Canadian Payments Association originally developed the file to assist in the collection of payment items, the processing of direct deposits, and pre-authorized payments to individuals at any financial institution in Canada. Two versions of the Financial Institutions File are available (Full and Regular).
The Full Version includes all records provided by the Canadian Payments Association, Operation status V (Valid), X (Valid) and C (Closed), internal and external accounting offices. Additional variables include Institution name, institution id (routing indirect clearer credits), transit numbers (foreign and domestic), bank identifier, institution type, serviceability code, exchange point code and census codes.
The Regular version includes financial institutions of types 01 or 10 - open branches only, does not include head offices, that is, internal and external accounting offices. Operation status V (Valid) and X (Valid) only, closed branches are not included. The file is updated quarterly every February, May, August and November.

The Canada Shopping Centre dataset provides the geographical coordinates of over 3,100 Canadian Shopping Centres, number of stores, parking spaces, gross leasable area (GLA), type of centre, proposed renovation plans and a relational database listing the major stores, x/y coordinates, store description and square footage within the retail centre.

Up to five of the most prominent anchors were chosen (based on square footage) for inclusion in the shopping centres database. In the rare occasion, where a shopping centre had more than five anchors and square footage numbers were not available, inclusion was two tiered. The first inclusion tier is based on average square footage of anchor names; the second inclusion tier is based on the average square footage of anchor descriptions. The anchors included in the database are based on lists provided by shopping centre management. A zero value for gross leasable area, stores, and parking indicates that the information is unavailable.

Retail centres that have a gross leasable area of 30,000 sq. ft. or greater are considered traditional shopping centres whereas those having a gross leasable area less than 30,000 sq. ft. are considered non-traditional.
